You found the perfect theme for your blog. Well…almost. As much as you wish you could afford custom design, it’s not happening now for reasons. That’s fine, you can still make your premium blog theme look custom, by making the right tweaks to your premium theme. It will take a little work, and a little code but you don’t have to settle for the same look as everyone else using your theme. Your theme will be different, your blog will look custom, without the custom price tag.
Change the Fonts
Don’t settle for the same fonts everyone else is using. Switch it up! Many premium themes will have a selection of fonts for you to choose from. So make use of that feature! It’s there for a reason, to help you customize the look of your theme. Changing the fonts you are using can change the entire feel of your blog, it’s one of the smallest fixes you can make that make the most impact. If your theme doesn’t have built in font options or maybe you just don’t like any of them, don’t despair. You can still change out your fonts, but it will take a bit of code to do it. Looking for free fonts? Google Fonts is my #1 go to stop. They do all the hard work for you, including giving you the code you need to make the fonts work on your blog.
Change the Colors
Sure, black and white might be fine for a boring old business site, but your family centered lifestyle blog needs something with more pop. Premium themes often have color themes you can choose from, or give you the option to change colors on your blog. It will vary on how much control they give you based on your theme, some let you go crazy and change all the colors without touching any code, others only give you limited color options. Either way, spend time customizing your blog’s color scheme, along with changing fonts it’s one of the biggest changes you can make to your theme.
Add Your Logo (and/or Header Image)
Text might be okay for your blog’s logo, but if you already have a header image or logo you are in love with be sure you add it to your new theme. Most premium (and free) themes allow you to upload a header image and/or a logo. It’s as easy as uploading an image and you shouldn’t have to touch any code at all! Your branded logo or header image will instantly give your blog a more custom feel. It’s a simple step that shouldn’t be over looked! While you are at it, make sure you add your own images anywhere else your theme might use stock images. Your blog is unique, and your images should reflect that.

Genesis themes in particular give you may different layout options. You don’t have to settle for the sidebar on the right! What if…it was on the right?! Or even if you had pages without the sidebar? Take a look at the layout options that your theme gives you and play around with them. Find out which one really enhances your blog and fits your content. To a lesser extent you can also play around with widgets to get the same effect on many themes. You don’t have to use all the widget areas a theme comes with. You could only use some of them, or you could use them all. Play around with your widget areas and the content you put in them to easily give your theme a custom look.
